Smudging is one of the oldest and most widely practised energy clearing rituals in the world.
For centuries - across Native American, Indigenous, South American and many other cultures - smoke from sacred plants has been used to purify space, clear stagnant energy, support spiritual connection and restore a sense of balance and presence. It's a practice that has stood the test of time because it works - and because there's something deeply grounding and intentional about the ritual of it.
White Sage and Palo Santo are the two most popular smudging tools available today - and while they're often used together, they have distinct energies and purposes. Here's everything you need to know about both.
White Sage
White Sage - Salvia apiana - has been used in Native American and Indigenous spiritual traditions for generations. Its cleansing smoke is deeply purifying, clearing negative, heavy or stagnant energy from a space or aura and restoring a sense of spiritual clarity and protection.
Of the two tools, White Sage is the stronger and more thorough cleanser. When you need a deep energetic reset - after illness, conflict, heavy emotional events or simply when a space feels loaded - White Sage is what you reach for.
The benefits of White Sage:
Energy clearing - White Sage is one of the most effective tools available for clearing heavy, stagnant or negative energy from a space or aura. It essentially wipes the energetic slate clean.
Spiritual clarity - regular smudging with White Sage supports a clearer connection to intuition, inner guidance and higher self. Many people incorporate it into their meditation and spiritual practice for exactly this reason.
Stress relief - the scent of burning White Sage has a naturally calming effect on the nervous system, supporting a sense of peace and grounded presence.
Emotional balance - particularly powerful after conflict, emotional intensity or any experience that has left heavy energy in your space or field.
How to use White Sage:
Light the smudge stick over a flame and allow it to catch for a moment, then blow out the flame gently so the leaves smoulder and smoke. Fan the smoke into the corners of your space - moving clockwise - or slowly around your body, from feet to crown, with the clear intention to cleanse and clear.
Hold this as a sacred ritual rather than a practical task. The intention you bring to it amplifies the effect significantly.
To extinguish: press the lit end firmly into a fireproof bowl with sand, or allow it to go out naturally. Never leave burning sage unattended.
Best times to use White Sage:
- When moving into a new home or workspace
- After illness, conflict or heavy emotional events
- Before or after energy healing, meditation or spiritual rituals
- When your space or energy feels heavy, off or depleted
- As a monthly clearing practice - particularly around the full moon

Palo Santo
Palo Santo - Bursera graveolens - is a sacred tree native to South America, traditionally used by shamans and healers for both cleansing and healing purposes. Its sweet, woody, slightly citrus scent is genuinely beautiful - and its energy is quite different from White Sage.
Where White Sage deeply clears, Palo Santo clears and then uplifts. It brings a warm, positive, grounding energy into a space - inviting in joy, peace and optimism after the clearing has taken place. Many people use White Sage and Palo Santo in sequence for exactly this reason.
Ethically harvested Palo Santo comes only from trees that have fallen naturally - never cut down - and rested on the forest floor for four to ten years to fully develop their spiritual potency and beautiful fragrance. This is worth knowing when choosing your supplier.
The benefits of Palo Santo:
Energy clearing - Palo Santo clears stagnant and negative energy effectively, though with a gentler touch than White Sage.
Raises vibration - one of Palo Santo's most distinctive qualities is its ability to uplift the energy of a space, inviting in joy, warmth and positive energy after clearing.
Focus and creativity - Palo Santo has a clarifying, inspiring quality that makes it wonderful before creative work, study or any task requiring mental clarity and focus.
Energetic protection - grounds your energy while creating a protective, high-vibration field around you and your space.
Healing support - traditionally used by South American healers for its physical as well as spiritual properties, Palo Santo has a long history of use for overall wellbeing and healing support.
How to use Palo Santo:
Light the stick and allow it to burn for thirty to sixty seconds, then blow out the flame and allow it to smoulder. Waft the smoke around yourself or your space with intention. Palo Santo tends to go out on its own when not being actively blown on - simply relight as needed.
To extinguish: rest it in a fireproof bowl. It will generally extinguish itself naturally.
Best times to use Palo Santo:
- After a tough day or heavy social interactions
- When you feel low, scattered or off-balance
- Before creative work, meditation or study
- After cleansing with White Sage - to seal the space with positive energy
- After an energy healing session
- When you simply want to create a warm, beautiful atmosphere at home

Which One Should You Use?
The simple guide:
White Sage - when you need a deep, thorough energetic clear. Heavy energy, conflict, illness, major life transitions. The reset button.
Palo Santo - when you want to shift the energy and bring in warmth, positivity and upliftment. Gentler, more daily-use energy. The blessing after the clearing.
Both together - our favourite approach. White Sage first to clear thoroughly, Palo Santo after to seal the space with positive, high-vibration energy. A beautifully complete practice.
Ultimately though - trust your instincts. Let the scent, feel and energy of each guide you to what you need. Your intuition about which one to reach for is almost always right.
A Note on Intention
The most important ingredient in any smudging practice is your intention.
Before you begin, take a moment to get clear on what you're clearing and what you're inviting in. State your intention aloud or silently as you work - something as simple as "I clear this space of any stagnant or heavy energy and invite in peace, clarity and positive energy" is completely sufficient.
The smoke is a tool. The intention is what makes it sacred.
