What is Labradorite?
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral first discovered in Labrador, Canada in the 1770s - though it has since been found in Finland, Madagascar, Russia and other parts of the world. The Finnish variety - known as Spectrolite - is particularly prized for its exceptional range of colour.
Its most distinctive feature is labradorescence - the optical phenomenon that creates that extraordinary play of iridescent colour across the surface. This effect is caused by light refracting between layers within the crystal structure, producing flashes that seem to come from deep within the stone rather than simply reflecting off its surface.
No two pieces of Labradorite are identical - the flash, the colours and the patterns are completely unique to each stone.
