What is Moonstone?
Moonstone is a variety of feldspar mineral - the same family as Labradorite - and its distinctive optical phenomenon is called adularescence. This is the soft, billowing glow that seems to move within the stone when light hits it - caused by light scattering between microscopic layers within the crystal structure.
Rainbow Moonstone - the variety we most commonly stock - is technically a variety of Labradorite that displays this adularescent quality alongside flashes of blue, violet and rainbow colour. Moonstone is found primarily in Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar and Myanmar - with the finest quality stones producing a deep blue adularescence against a translucent white background.
