Healing With The Power Of The Full Moon: A Guide To Letting Go & Releasing

There's something undeniably powerful about a full moon.

Even if you're not someone who follows lunar cycles closely, you've probably noticed it - that heightened energy, the intensity of emotions, the feeling that something is stirring beneath the surface. The full moon amplifies everything. And while that can sometimes feel overwhelming, it also creates one of the most potent opportunities of the month for healing, release and transformation.

This is a guide to working with that energy intentionally - so that instead of being swept along by it, you can use it.


Why the Full Moon Affects Us

The moon governs the tides - and since our bodies are made mostly of water, it makes sense that we feel its pull too. The full moon brings things to the surface. Emotions that have been simmering, patterns we've been avoiding, energy that needs to move. It's not always comfortable, but it's always purposeful.

The days before and after the full moon carry this energy too - so if you've been feeling more emotional or unsettled than usual, that's likely why.

The key is to work with it rather than against it.


1. Journalling for Emotional Release

Journalling is one of the most powerful things you can do during a full moon - and one of the simplest.

Find a quiet, comfortable space and allow yourself to write freely - no rules, no structure, no filter. Pour it all out onto the page. What are you feeling? What has been weighing on you? What patterns keep showing up in your life?

Once you've experienced the cathartic release of writing without holding back, move into these prompts:

  • How can I find more acceptance and peace around this?
  • What can I do about this situation that is within my control?
  • What do I want to create in my life moving forward?
  • What steps might I need to take to get there?
  • What is one small thing I can do right now to shift things?

These questions move you from processing into possibility - and with the amplified energy of the full moon behind you, that shift can be profound.


2. Meditation for Inner Calm

The full moon's energy can feel ungrounding - which makes meditation especially valuable at this time.

Find a quiet, comfortable space to sit. Close your eyes, focus on your breath and visualise the moon's soft healing light surrounding you - filling you with a sense of peace and calm. Each time your mind wanders, gently return to the breath.

You can also include affirmations in your practice:

  • I am ready to release what no longer serves me
  • I am filled with healing light, love and positive energy
  • I am powerful and grounded in my body

Even ten minutes of this practice during a full moon can create a meaningful shift in how you feel.


3. Grounding

When the full moon's energy feels overwhelming or ungrounding, getting your feet on the earth is one of the most effective things you can do.

Step outside barefoot onto grass, soil or sand if you can. Take slow, deep breaths and visualise any heavy energy flowing out through your feet and into the earth, where it is transmuted and healed. Imagine roots growing from your feet, anchoring you firmly to the ground.

If you can't get outside, visualise this instead - it's surprisingly effective.

For a deeper practice, once you feel grounded, visualise the energy of the full moon radiating down through the top of your head - flowing through your entire body, meeting the earth energy rising up through your feet. Allow both energies to meet in the centre of your body, bringing balance, alignment and a deep sense of calm.


4. Moon Bathing

Moon bathing is exactly what it sounds like - and it's one of our favourite full moon rituals.

Find a comfortable spot where you can see the moon - outside if possible, or by a window. Simply be still in its light. Set an intention, visualise releasing what is no longer serving you, or simply breathe and allow the moon's energy to do its work. There's something deeply restorative about this practice - even just a few minutes feels significant.


5. Crystal Healing

The full moon is one of the best times to work with crystals - their energy is amplified, and it's also the perfect opportunity to cleanse and recharge your collection.

Simply place your crystals outside under the moonlight overnight, or on a windowsill where the moonlight can reach them. They'll be cleansed and recharged by morning.

6. Release & Let Go With Self-Compassion

The full moon is one of the most powerful times for release - but it's also one of the most emotionally intense. Things come to the surface that can feel confronting and hard to sit with.

Please be gentle with yourself through this process.

Your full moon rituals don't have to be perfect. The emotions that arise don't have to make complete sense. What matters is that you allow yourself to feel them without judgement - because that acceptance is where the real healing lives.

Letting go is rarely a single moment. It's a process, and the full moon simply gives you an especially supported opportunity to take another step in that direction.
