Halloween is often seen as a day of costumes and candy - but at its heart, it carries something much deeper and more sacred.
Traditionally known as Samhain - pronounced "sah-win" - this ancient Celtic festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It was a time to pause, reflect and honour the natural cycles of death and rebirth that move through the world around us - and through us.
On this night, it was believed that the veil between worlds was at its thinnest - making it a particularly powerful time for intuitive connection, ancestor honouring and the kind of deep, honest inner reflection that the darker months naturally invite.
People would light candles and bonfires to guide the spirits of loved ones home, leave offerings of food in gratitude and take quiet moments to release what no longer served them - setting intentions for the introspective months ahead.
Whether or not you resonate with the spiritual traditions behind it, the energy of this time of year is real. Something shifts in late October. The invitation to go inward, let go and prepare for the quieter season ahead is one worth accepting.

The Deeper Meaning of This Season
Samhain - and the energy of Halloween at its most authentic - is fundamentally about transformation.
It's about recognising that endings are not just endings. They are doorways. Every release creates space. Every letting go makes room for something new. The tree doesn't mourn its leaves - it releases them as part of a natural and necessary cycle, trusting that what comes next is exactly right.
This time of year extends that same invitation to us.
What are you ready to release? What chapter has run its course? What old pattern, belief or version of yourself have you been holding onto past its natural end?
These are the questions Samhain has always asked - and they're as relevant now as they were thousands of years ago.

Reflection Prompts for This Season
Take some quiet time with these questions - in a journal, during meditation or simply in a moment of stillness:
- What am I ready to release or let go of before the year ends?
- What lessons from this year am I ready to fully integrate?
- What patterns or beliefs have I been carrying that no longer serve me?
- How can I create more peace, grounding and presence as I move into the quieter months ahead?
- What do I want to carry forward - and what am I ready to leave behind?
There are no right or wrong answers. Just honesty, and a willingness to sit with what comes up.

A Simple Samhain Ritual
You don't need anything elaborate - just presence, intention and a willingness to show up for yourself.
What you'll need: a candle, a small piece of paper and pen, a crystal of your choice and a fireproof bowl or space to safely burn or bury the paper.
The ritual:
-
Create a quiet space - light your candle and sit somewhere comfortable where you won't be disturbed. Take a few moments simply to arrive.
-
Ground your energy - close your eyes and take several slow, deep breaths. Feel your connection to the earth beneath you. If you have grounding crystals, hold them now.
-
Reflect - bring to mind something you're ready to release. An old pattern. A worry that has worn out its welcome. A chapter that has run its course. A version of yourself you've outgrown. Hold it gently in your awareness without judgement.
-
Write it down - on your small piece of paper, write what you're releasing. You can be specific or simply write a word or feeling. This act of writing it down makes it real - and makes the release real too.
-
Hold your crystal - hold your chosen crystal in your hands and set a clear intention to release this with gratitude. Thank it for the lessons it brought. Then let it go.
-
Burn or bury the paper - safely and carefully, burn the paper in your fireproof bowl or bury it in the earth. Watch the smoke rise or feel the earth receive it - and with it, the energy you're releasing.
-
Close with gratitude - take a moment to express gratitude. For the lessons of the year. For your own resilience and growth. For the natural cycles that are always working in your favour - even when it doesn't feel that way.
-
Invite in the new - if you'd like, light a second candle for new beginnings. Set an intention for what you want to call in as you move into the quieter months ahead. Peace. Clarity. Rest. Growth. Whatever feels most true.
Closing Thoughts
Halloween is a powerful reminder that endings are never just endings - they are doorways to transformation.
It's an invitation to honour your past, acknowledge how far you've come, and return to yourself with a little more clarity and intention than before. Whether you mark this time with a full ritual, a quiet moment with a candle and a crystal, or simply a few honest questions in a journal - trust that the intention you bring to it matters.
The veil is thin. The invitation is open. You get to choose how to meet it.
