What is Carnelian?
Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony - a microcrystalline form of Quartz - and its beautiful warm colours range from pale peach and soft orange through to deep red-orange and rich burgundy. Its colour comes from iron oxide impurities within the crystal structure.
It's found in many parts of the world - Brazil, India, Madagascar, Uruguay and the United States among the most significant sources. India has been producing Carnelian for thousands of years and remains one of the primary sources of high quality stones today.
Carnelian has been treasured since ancient times - by the Egyptians who called it the setting sun and used it extensively in jewellery and amulets, by the Romans who carved signet rings from it, by the ancient Greeks and by virtually every culture that has encountered it. Napoleon carried a Carnelian talisman. Ancient warriors wore it into battle for courage and strength.

Caring for Your Carnelian
Carnelian is a robust crystal - rating 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale - and generally easy to care for.
It's one of the few crystals that can actually be cleansed in sunlight - in fact a short period in morning sunlight both cleanses and energises Carnelian beautifully, restoring its warm, vibrant colour and energy. Keep sun exposure to a couple of hours maximum to avoid any fading over time.
