How to Relieve Stress & Anxiety: Practical Techniques, Crystals & Knowing When Something Has to Change

Danielle Turk

Stress and anxiety in everyday life can be genuinely debilitating - and the tricky thing is that everyone's threshold is different. What overwhelms one person might barely register for another, and that's okay. The most important thing is not to judge yourself for where your limits are. Trusting yourself to know what you can and can't handle is one of the most underrated forms of self-love there is.

There are so many techniques out there for managing stress and anxiety - and we'll get to those. But first, I want to talk about something that doesn't get discussed enough.

The Thing Nobody Wants to Hear

Sometimes the biggest source of stress in our life isn't something we can manage our way out of - it's something we need to change.

If there is one big thing in your life that is causing mounting pressure - a job you dread, a relationship that's draining you, a path that no longer feels right - it will lower your threshold for coping with everything else too. You can do all the breathwork and crystal healing in the world, and it will help, but if the root cause is still there, relief will only ever be temporary.

I know this from personal experience. A few years ago I made the decision to leave a Veterinary Medicine degree after three years of study. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made - and also one of the best. The course was taking a real toll on me. I was becoming someone I didn't recognise, and my intuition was quietly - then not so quietly - telling me something needed to change.

It took months of fighting with myself before I finally put myself first and walked away. And it was scary. When you've invested years into a particular vision of your life, letting it go can feel like losing yourself. But moving forward - even into the unknown - is always better than staying stuck in something that is slowly wearing you down.

If something in your life is causing that deep, persistent feeling of misalignment - the kind that sits in your chest and doesn't go away - it might be worth sitting with the question of whether managing the stress is really the answer, or whether something needs to change.

Only you can know that. And only you have the power to do something about it.

Practical Techniques for Everyday Stress Relief

Once you've been honest with yourself about the bigger picture, these techniques can make a genuine difference for the everyday stress and anxiety we all navigate.

Move Your Body

Exercise is one of the most effective stress relievers available - it shifts anxious energy, releases endorphins and brings you back into your body. It doesn't have to be intense. Walking, yoga, pilates and tai chi all offer real benefits. Even a short walk outside can completely shift your state.

Eat Well

Wholefoods genuinely make a difference to how you feel - clearer, more stable, more resilient. When we're stressed it's tempting to reach for comfort food, but nourishing your body well is one of the kindest things you can do for your nervous system.

Talk It Out

Sharing what you're carrying with someone you trust - a friend, a therapist, a loved one - can provide enormous relief. Getting stress out of your body and into words takes away some of its power. There is nothing weak about seeking support. If anything, it takes real courage.

Get Into Nature

Spending time outside - walking, sitting at the beach, being in a park - has a grounding, clarifying effect that is hard to replicate indoors. Fresh air, natural light and connection to the earth all work together to calm the nervous system and clear the mind.

Breathe Deeply

The breath is one of the most powerful tools we have for shifting out of stress and into calm. Notice right now - is your breath shallow and tight, or slow and deep? A few slow, intentional deep breaths activates the parasympathetic nervous system - your body's rest mode - and can shift your state remarkably quickly.

Ground Yourself

Grounding is especially helpful when you feel overwhelmed, scattered or like your thoughts are spiralling. The best way is always feet on the earth - grass, sand, soil. If you're indoors, try this: close your eyes and take five slow deep breaths. Imagine long roots growing from your feet down into the earth, anchoring you there. Repeat to yourself - I am safe. I am grounded. Return to this whenever you feel yourself drifting into anxiety.

Meditate

Meditation is one of the most effective ways to hear your own inner voice and come back to yourself. Even five minutes makes a difference. Try the free Insight Timer app if you're not sure where to start - it has guided meditations for every mood and experience level.

If you're at work or somewhere you can't fully switch off, try this quick exercise: find somewhere quiet, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Scan your body with your awareness and notice where you're holding tension or heaviness. Breathe into that area with acceptance - and simply allow it to soften.

Use Affirmations

Affirmations work by gradually shifting the stories we tell ourselves. You may not fully believe them at first - that's normal. Say them daily anyway, and over time they begin to sink in. Some that I love for stress and anxiety:

  • I am safe
  • I love myself
  • I have the strength to improve my life
  • I deserve to be happy
  • I am fully in the now

Journal

Writing things down gets them out of your head and onto paper where you can actually look at them. Journal about what's stressing you, what you're grateful for, what you want your life to look like. It brings clarity in a way that just thinking rarely does.

Prioritise Real Self-Care

Not the performative kind - the real kind. A solo walk. A hot bath. A cup of tea on the couch with no phone and no obligations. Whatever genuinely restores you. That space creates a shift from overwhelm back to calm, and it matters more than most of us allow it to.
