What is Citrine?
Citrine is a variety of Quartz - its warm yellow to golden orange colour comes from traces of iron within the crystal structure. It's found primarily in Brazil, Bolivia, Spain and Madagascar.
It's worth knowing that most Citrine on the market is actually heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz - which gives it that deep orange colour you'll often see. Natural Citrine is rarer, with a paler, more subtle yellow tone. Both are beautiful and both carry Citrine energy, but natural Citrine is considered by many to have a more gentle, authentic vibration.

Natural vs Heat Treated Citrine - What's the Difference?
This is one of the questions we get asked most often about Citrine - and it's a great one.
Natural Citrine forms in the earth with its colour already present. It tends to be pale yellow to light golden in colour, sometimes with smoky undertones. It's rarer and generally more expensive. Many crystal enthusiasts prefer natural Citrine for its authentic, unaltered energy.
Heat Treated Citrine is Amethyst or Smoky Quartz that has been heated to high temperatures, which transforms its colour to the deep orange-gold you'll often see in crystal shops. It's more widely available and more affordable. It still carries Citrine properties and is genuinely beautiful - just know what you're buying.
Both have their place. Neither is better or worse - it comes down to personal preference and what calls to you.

Caring for Your Citrine
As mentioned, Citrine is one of the few crystals that doesn't need regular cleansing - it naturally transmutes negative energy rather than absorbing it. Citrine can fade in prolonged direct sunlight, so while a little sun is fine, avoid leaving it on a windowsill for extended periods.
