So your crystals have arrived - or maybe you've had your collection for a while and you're wondering how to keep their energy at its best.
Cleansing and charging your crystals is one of the most important and rewarding parts of working with them. It's also much simpler than it might sound. Think of it like this - your crystals are working hard for you, absorbing energy, holding space and supporting your intentions. Every now and then they need a reset so they can continue to do that effectively.
Here's everything you need to know.
Why Cleanse Your Crystals?
As crystals work - whether you're carrying them, meditating with them or placing them in your home - they absorb energy from their environment and from you. Over time this can dull their natural vibration and affect how effectively they work.
Cleansing clears away that accumulated energy and brings your crystal back to its natural, high-vibration state - fresh, clear and ready to work with you again.
When to cleanse:
- When your crystal first arrives - it will have passed through many hands before reaching you
- After periods of intense use or emotional work
- Once a month as a general maintenance practice
- Before and after using crystals in energy healing sessions
- Whenever they simply feel heavy, dull or less vibrant than usual
Trust your instincts - if it feels like your crystal needs a cleanse, it probably does.

How to Cleanse Your Crystals
There are many beautiful ways to cleanse crystals - choose the method that resonates most with you, keeping in mind the important notes about water and sunlight sensitivity below.
Smudging with Sage or Palo Santo
One of the most traditional and widely used cleansing methods. Light your White Sage smudge stick or Palo Santo → and gently waft the cleansing smoke over your crystals, holding the intention that all unwanted or stagnant energy be cleared and the crystal returned to its natural high-vibration state.
This is one of our personal favourites - there's something deeply satisfying and ritualistic about it. Shop smudging supplies →

Moonlight
Placing your crystals under the light of the full moon is one of the most gentle, powerful and universally safe cleansing methods available - it works for virtually every crystal without exception.
Place your crystals outside on the night of the full moon, or on a windowsill where the moonlight can reach them. Leave them overnight and collect them in the morning - cleansed, charged and glowing.
The energy of the full moon is particularly potent for this - but any moonlight will do. You can also read our full moon healing guide → for more on working with lunar energy.
Selenite or High Vibration Crystals
Certain crystals have the unique ability to cleanse other crystals simply by proximity. Selenite is the most widely used for this - place your crystals on a Selenite charging plate → or next to a piece of raw Selenite for a few hours or overnight.
Large Amethyst geodes, Amethyst clusters and Clear Quartz clusters work beautifully for this too. This is a wonderful low-effort option that you can set up permanently on your crystal shelf.

Sound Healing
Sound is a powerful and deeply effective cleansing tool - the vibrations move through and around the crystal, shifting stagnant energy and restoring its natural frequency. Use a singing bowl, tuning fork, bells or even a playlist of high vibration music. Simply allow the sound to wash over your crystals with the intention to clear and reset their energy.

Visualisation
This is a beautiful method that requires nothing but your own focused intention.
Hold your crystal in your hands, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Visualise your hands filling with pure white healing light. Allow that light to surround and permeate the crystal completely - see it gently dissolving any unwanted energy and returning the crystal to its natural, luminous state. Continue until you feel a shift - a sense of lightness or clarity in the crystal's energy.
This method works beautifully and is always available to you, no matter where you are.
Reiki & Energy Healing
If you practice Reiki or energy healing, you can direct healing energy to your crystals with the intention to cleanse and restore them. This is my personal favourite method - and one I use regularly with my own collection.

Running Water
Holding your crystal under cool running water for a minute or two - with the intention that any stagnant energy be washed away - is a simple and effective cleansing method. Follow with a moment in sunlight or moonlight to recharge.
Important: Not all crystals are safe in water. The following crystals should never be submerged or held under running water as it can cause damage or disintegration - Selenite, Halite, Malachite, Fluorite, Calcite, Desert Rose, Lapis Lazuli and Labradorite. When in doubt, choose a different method.
Sunlight
A short period in morning sunlight can cleanse and energise many crystals beautifully. An hour or two is generally sufficient.
Important: Some crystals are sensitive to prolonged sunlight and can fade or be damaged. Keep sunlight exposure brief for - Amethyst, Ametrine, Aquamarine, Aventurine, Celestite, Citrine, Fluorite, Kunzite, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Spirit Quartz and Turquoise. When in doubt, opt for moonlight instead.

Burying in the Earth
Returning a crystal to the earth - burying it in soil for a period of time - is a deeply grounding and restorative cleansing method. This is particularly wonderful for heavily used crystals that need a deeper reset.
Leave them for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Just make sure to mark where you've buried them - and be mindful of moisture if your crystal is sensitive to water.
How to Charge & Set Intentions With Your Crystals
Cleansing and charging are two separate but related practices. Cleansing clears away old energy - charging infuses your crystal with fresh, intentional energy aligned to your specific purpose.
This is also sometimes called programming your crystal.
How to do it:
Find a quiet space and hold your crystal in both hands. Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths - allowing yourself to settle and become present.
When you feel ready, set your intention clearly - either aloud or silently. Be specific about what you're asking the crystal to support you with. You might say: "I am working with this Amethyst to support restful sleep and a calm mind" or "I am asking this Citrine to support my confidence and abundance."
Sit with this intention for a moment - feel it, believe it and allow a sense of gratitude and openness to settle in. Thank the crystal for its support and trust that it is working with your energy for your highest good.
You can return to this practice whenever you feel called to - particularly after cleansing, or when beginning to work with a crystal for a new intention.

How Often Should You Cleanse?
As a general guide - once a month works well for most crystals in regular use. If you're working with a crystal intensively - carrying it daily, using it in healing work or going through a particularly emotionally heavy period - cleanse more frequently, perhaps once a week.
Trust your instincts. If your crystal feels like it needs a cleanse, give it one.
A Simple Monthly Crystal Ritual
Once a month - ideally around the full moon - take a few minutes to tend to your collection.
Gather your crystals, cleanse them using your preferred method and take a moment to reconnect with each one. Notice how they feel. Set fresh intentions where needed. Express gratitude for the support they've provided.
It's a simple, grounding ritual that keeps your collection energetically healthy and your connection to your crystals strong.
